Western Australia keeps residents under tight restrictions amid latest COVID surge

If you thought Democrats were taking pandemic restrictions too far here in America, just wait until you hear what’s happening on the other side of the world.

New reports indicate lockdown efforts in parts of Australia have gone so far as to ban dancing.

According to Salon, the restrictions gained renewed criticism after a screenshot shared to Twitter appeared to show the Western Australia government clarifying its COVID-related guidelines ahead of the New Year.

Conspiracy theorist Paul Joseph Watson had drawn attention to a Facebook comment in which the Western Australia government explained that “dancing is strictly not permitted.”

No dancing

Another Facebook user had reportedly asked if masks needed to be worn at parties to ring in the New Year. “Do we have to wear masks at a private home new years party? Are we still allowed to have a private new years party?” the user wrote.

A screenshot appeared to show the Western Australia government’s response: “Hi Gillian, masks are not required at private residences. Dancing is strictly not permitted.”

The tweet even got the attention of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R), who apparently confused Western Australia, abbreviated WA, with Washington state.

According to Salon, Australia, for its part, bore the brunt of Cruz’s wrath earlier this year. “I’ve always said Australia is the Texas of the Pacific,” the senator remarked. “[The COVID] tyranny of their current government is disgraceful and sad. Individual liberty matters. I stand with the people of Australia.”

More rules

NPR reported in July 2020 that the Australian state of New South Wales had banned similar “high-risk activities” in light of surges in coronavirus cases there at the time.

“We absolutely need everybody seated when they are in a venue,” one local lawmaker said. “No dancing, no singing, no mingling.”

At the time, weddings and corporate events were capped at 150 attendees. Other gatherings were capped at 100 people.

Nowadays, The Guardian reports that Western Australia “remains under tight travel restrictions, with visitors from every other state or territory barred from entry unless they belong to a narrow set of approved travelers.” Will the tyranny ever end?
