House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was hoping Democrats could gain another seat in the House, but her party was spoiled.
After trailing in polls by a significant margin throughout the election cycle in North Carolina, Dan Bishop rallied in the final stretches, and will now be known as Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC), the Associated Press reports.
According to Trump, Bishop was struggling mightily for support in his forever red district. Supposedly down 17 points, he reached out to Trump for help, and help the president surely did.
Trump even went to North Carolina to hold a rally for Bishop, which apparently put the candidate over the top.
It was a narrow victory for Bishop in a Republican stronghold, but it was a victory nonetheless.
The Media Spin
The liberal media establishment has been trying to make the best of this loss, as are Democrats, but are they really telling the truth?
For one, special elections never really get full voter interest, so the Dems definitely had a shot at this. Second, if the polling numbers cited Trump are accurate, his open support of Bishop made all the difference.
As far as the media is concerned, though, because Bishop was an open supporter of the president, the close race is proof that support for Trump is waning in areas where Trump won easily in 2016.
The AP headline for this story is evidence of how the media is spinning the outcome. The headline read, “GOP holds N Carolina House seat but shows frailty in suburbs” when it easily could have read, “Trump saves GOP North Carolina seat from Democrats with last-second push.”
The new buzz the last few days has been how badly Trump is polling against the top Democrat contenders.
Perhaps it is time to remind everyone that Trump also trailed Hillary significantly in every pre-election poll, yet he won convincingly in the end.
Bishop’s victory tells us two things. First, polls don’t actually mean much, and second, Trump still has significant drawing power, something both the media and the Democrat party will never admit.
