‘She’s a socialist’: Republicans speak out against Pelosi’s new House mask mandate

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Tuesday that she would be following the divisive guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the Capitol’s attending physician to reinstate strict maks mandates in the chamber.

The move spurred complaints from Republicans who opposed the initial requirement, which was lifted only about a month ago. Opposition only intensified when it was revealed that Capitol Police officers could arrest non-compliant House staffers and visitors.

“We are not wearing masks”

According to the Washington Examiner, the latest update came on Thursday even as Pelosi’s detractors portrayed her as a tyrant and even proclaimed their intentions to defy her orders.

Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) shared an internal bulletin, asserting that the speaker’s most recent “abuse of power” would require all personnel to wear masks while indoors at the Capitol complex.

The bulletin further directed Capitol Police officers to report non-compliant House members to the House sergeant-at-arms. Maskless staffers and visitors who refused to comply would be denied admission to the complex or even arrested and charged with unlawful entry.

Libertarian-leaning Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) shared Cammack’s tweet, adding: “This is INSANE. Might as well come into my office and arrest my entire staff. We are not wearing masks. I support the Capitol Hill Police, but the Chief of Police made a mistake here.”

“This is the end of it”

He went on to assert that the Capitol’s “physician and the chief of police don’t have this authority.”

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) echoed those remarks, tweeting that threatening to arrest individuals for failing to wear a mask is “insanity,” not to mention “unlawful and tyrannical.”

Even some Republicans from the party’s establishment wing were incensed, including Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), as she demonstrated in a video message that made it clear she would not be abiding by Pelosi’s mandate when she is not inside the House chamber itself.

Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX) was more direct in his remarks, declaring: “Nancy Pelosi is a tyrant, she’s a socialist, she’s now deputized armed police at the Capitol to arrest staffers if they don’t have a mask on. This is the end of it. This is not the House of Pelosi, this is the House of the People. She’s got to go.”
