Republicans launch Get Out the Vote campaign for Wisconsin Supreme Court race

Breitbart News exclusively reports that the Republican National Committee (RNC) is using its resources in order to try to ensure that the race for Wisconsin’s Supreme Court ends in the Republicans’ favor.

Per the outlet:

The Republican Party has invested time and money in the Get Out the Vote (GOTV) effort for the “consequential,” “nonpolitical” Wisconsin Supreme Court race, Breitbart News has learned.

Background

We are now just a little over three weeks away from the April 4 election to select a member of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

In Wisconsin, statewide elections, which are supposed to be non-partisan, are held to select the seven members of the state’s highest court. The elected justice then serves for a ten-year term.

The April 4 election is to replace Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Patience Roggensack. Rather than seek reelection, Roggensack, a conservative, has decided that now is the time that she would like to move on from the court.

This, as a result, has set up what many are referring to as a “consequential” election.

Here’s what is at stake:

Currently, the Wisconsin Supreme Court has a 4 to 3 split in favor of conservative justices. Accordingly, whether Roggensack is replaced by a liberal or conservative justice will essentially indicate how the court would be likely to rule on a number of hot-button issues.

The candidates who are facing off for Roggensack’s seat are Janet Protasiewicz and Dan Kelly. Protasieqicz is the liberal candidate and Kelly, a former member of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, is the conservative one. Both came out on top in the four-way primary that was held.

As an example of what is at stake here, the Wisconsin Supreme Court is set to hear a challenge to the state’s controversial abortion ban, and it appears certain that whether or not the law is upheld will depend on whether Protasiewicz or Kelly wins the April 4 race. The abortion provider Planned Parenthood has spent over $1 million trying to ensure that Protasiewicz will win.

This is one of several hot-button issues which, more likely than not, will be decided by the April 4 election.

The Republican effort

It is because so much is on the line that the RNC is working to try to make sure that Kelly wins the race.

Breitbart reports:

Ahead of the April 4 election, Breitbart News has learned that Republican volunteers have already made over 134,000 voter contacts with nearly 300 volunteers. The national party is responsible for also having paid field staff across the state to help with voter integrity, while RNC Digital is trying to help bolster turnout as well.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel put out a statement, saying:

The Republican National Committee is working hand in glove with the Republican Party of Wisconsin to retain control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The Badger State deserves a Supreme Court that is not beholden to special interests and a progressive liberal agenda, and that’s why Wisconsinites are energized to turn out and vote conservative come April.

It remains to be seen whether the Republican effort will be enough. The Democrats are pushing just as hard, if not harder, for Protasiewicz.
