A group of more than 50 congressional Republicans is calling upon President Joe Biden to fire Vice President Kamala Harris from her role leading the White House’s response to the ongoing crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border on the diplomatic front.
According to the Daily Caller, the congressman leading the way on the effort is Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI). He was joined by 55 of his colleagues in a letter sent to President Biden last week.
Their message comes as migrants have continued to cross the U.S.–Mexico border in droves in recent months. As the New York Post notes, the crisis amounts to one of the earliest and “most pressing challenges of Biden’s presidency[,] and Harris has been tapped with solving the problem.”
“Dear President Biden”
In their letter, dated Friday, the Republican lawmakers called Harris out for her utter failures in that regard.
“Despite being in the midst of a border crisis this country has not seen in two decades, Vice President Harris has not yet shown adequate interest in observing this crisis first-hand,” the letter reads, according to Breitbart.
“In the 85 days since the Vice President has been tasked with solving this crisis, she has yet to visit the border and meet with Border Patrol agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, and local law enforcement officials,” it added.
The lawmakers went on to explain that “in our experience, it is important to meet with these officials to learn about their perspectives and observations about the origins and motivations of the thousands of people coming here every day.” The lawmakers called Harris’ inaction “an insult to our hardworking Border Patrol, ICE, and local law enforcement officials.”
On “root causes”
Harris, of course, has not visited the southern border since ascending to the White House — and despite promising to do so, she still hasn’t announced a date for such a trip.
Instead, Harris has insisted that she’s in charge of addressing the so-called “root causes” of the crisis. To that end, she recently took a trip to Central America, but many — including dozens of House Republicans — felt she fell short of expectations.
“President Harris wrongly presumes that ‘root causes of migration can only stem from a migrant’s country of origin,” the Grothman-led group wrote in their recent letter, according to the Daily Caller. “Even if we assume that ‘root causes’ only stem from a migrant’s country of origin, the exclusive focus on Central American countries ignores that fact that we see many migrants attempting to illegally cross our southern border from countries all over the world, including Russia, Brazil, Cuba, and Haiti.”
The lawmakers wrapped up the letter with a call for Harris to be ousted once and for all. “At the time of her appointment, you stated, ‘I can think of nobody who is better qualified to do this,'” the lawmakers wrote to Biden. “We disagree.”
They concluded: “We sincerely urge you to find someone else in your administration to assist you in getting a handle on this border crisis.” It’d certainly be a good start.
