Republican Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) has resigned from the board of a Christian organization following a heated exchange with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), as it seems the group forced the legislator to step down for not reflecting its values.
Conservatives are simply held to a different standard than their Democrat counterparts, as this case reveals.
The organization, Bread for the World, accepted Yoho’s resignation with a statement saying, “We believe that Rep. Ted Yoho’s recent actions and words as reported in the media are not reflective of the ethical standards expected of members of our Board of Directors.”
Ironically, Yoho’s resignation from the organization came after an exchange he had with Ocasio-Cortez over her comments suggesting that New York’s recent crime wave was the result of people stealing bread for their hungry families.
Last Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez claimed, “Maybe this has to do with the fact that people aren’t paying their rent & are scared to pay their rent & so they go out & they need to feed their child & they don’t have money so… they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry.”
New York City has seen an increase in shootings of 130% over the last month, something that is hardly attributable to the shoplifting of grocery staples.
According to a reporter from The Hill who overheard the confrontation, “In a brief but heated exchange…Yoho told Ocasio-Cortez she was ‘disgusting’ for recently suggesting that poverty and unemployment are driving a spike in crime in New York City during the coronavirus pandemic.”
Time for Republicans to fight
Representative Yoho’s decision to confront Ocasio-Cortez over her perplexing remarks may have been ill-advised, but it’s also difficult to take Ocasio-Cortez’s account of the confrontation as gospel.
One thing is certain — the decision by Bread for the World to force Yoho to resign won’t win them any mercy from vengeful Democrats.
Republicans should have learned by now that they will not win by playing nice, particularly during a time when Democrats like Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) are openly lying about the reality of violence in America right now.
The conduct of Democrats is disgusting, and Republicans need to call them out on it.
If President Donald Trump has anything to teach his Republican colleagues, it is that they cannot be afraid to fight hard in order to win.
