Republican state senator Mike Folmer of Pennsylvania has been arrested for possession of child pornography, The Washington Examiner reports.
The state attorney general also charged Folmer with sexual abuse of children and criminal use of a communication facility, according to reports.
Folmer has been accused of sharing child pornography on the social media site Tumblr.
He submitted his letter of resignation on Wednesday.
Folmer was serving as chairman of the Senate State Government Committee. He has since been removed from the position by Senate leadership.
With Folmer’s resignation from office and removal from his posts, the Senate leader will soon call for a special election to fill his seat.
And while the legislative body works to fill his vacant spot, Folmer will have a preliminary hearing on Sept. 26.
Meanwhile, pundits have taken to scrutinizing Folmer’s political record — and it is an interesting one. In hindsight, what Folmer opposed is ironic.
He stood against a bill that would extend the statute of limitations, making it easier for victims of child sex abuse to sue perpetrators.
For his part, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf didn’t hold back in addressing the situation.
“The charges against Senator Folmer are disgusting and beyond comprehension, and show he has taken advantage of the trust and privilege afforded by the people of Pennsylvania,” Wolf said.
Hopefully, justice will soon be served.
