Kansas Republican Greg Lewis resigns in wake of cancer diagnosis

It still baffles many how we can put a man on the moon but have yet to find a cure for cancer.

Kansas State Rep. Greg Lewis (R) announced Monday that he is resigning his seat as he battles a cancerous brain tumor.

“It has become clearly apparent to me that I cannot represent and serve … the people of my district at the level they so deserve,” Lewis told the House. “Therefore I am tendering my resignation … effective Friday.”

Fighting for His Life

Lewis is actually new to politics. He hails from generations of cattle ranchers in St. John.

Rep. Lewis was just elected to office in the 2016 elections and is leaving far short of his goals.

During his resignation speech, Lewis stated, “Many are the plans of a man’s heart, but it’s the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

Recent Diagnosis Changes His Life

Lewis only found out about the tumor this past Christmas. While he was vacationing over the holiday, he visited his son in Kansas City.

All of a sudden, he started to experience instability and vision problems. After undergoing examinations, the brain tumor was revealed.

In an effort to fight for his life, Lewis has already undergone three surgeries. He is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

Anyone that has ever seen a friend or family member go through this knows how much it can take out of a person. So it is no surprise to see Lewis give up his seat to concentrate all of his efforts on this recovery.

In parting, he offered some advice everyone should heed: “Enjoy each day, enjoy your family, your friends, your fellow legislators, but do not take yourself too seriously.”

We wish you nothing but the best as you fight for your health, Mr. Lewis. Godspeed.
