President Joe Biden has responded to the rapid crumbling of the Afghan government and military by attempting to shift blame elsewhere and claiming that no one could have foreseen the dire consequences of the U.S. troop withdrawal from the country.
Multiple reports, however, indicate that officials in both the State Department and Defense Department issued urgent advisories in recent months about the possibility of precisely such a negative outcome.
Reports contradict Biden narrative
According to the Daily Wire, the incriminating warnings suggest that Biden either knowingly misinformed the American people or forgot what his own advisers told him. Neither possibility is reassuring.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that an internal State Department cable dated July 13 was sent through a confidential channel to Secretary of State Antony Blinken. It explicitly warned of an imminent Taliban takeover and the Afghan government’s inability to prevent it.
Nearly two dozen U.S. citizens serving as staffers at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul reportedly signed the cable, which is believed to have been received and read by Blinken himself.
Since that report was published, similar accounts have been reported by ABC News, Fox News, and other mainstream media outlets, each of which claimed to have independently confirmed details about the content of the message.
The Wall Street Journal published a separate report on Monday revealing that top Pentagon officials — including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Mark Milley — advised against Biden’s plan for a complete withdrawal.
“More quickly than we had anticipated”
Instead, the military leaders reportedly pleaded with him to leave a force of about 2,500 troops in order to maintain stability in the region.
Biden was also reportedly informed over the course of several meetings that a full withdrawal could bring about the collapse of Afghanistan’s government and security forces coinciding with a rapid takeover by the Taliban. That is exactly what has played out over the course of recent days and weeks.
Furthermore, NBC News reported on Monday that the Taliban launched its offensive in early May, establishing control over most of the country while facing minimal resistance from Afghan forces. The Biden administration’s diplomatic, intelligence, and military advisers surely tracked the troubling progress as it happened.
On Monday, however, the president asserted that the situation “did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated,” apparently insinuating that no one in his administration predicted the rapid collapse. Two days later, Biden denied having received warnings by military officials and diplomats regarding the potentially dire consequences.
Despite their apparent prior warnings, though, the Daily Wire noted that Austin, Blinken, Milley, and others have since deferred to Biden, repeating his false narrative that the Taliban uprising could not have been predicted. It all points to the need for accountability in the wake of a clear foreign policy disaster.
