Report reveals Trump’s potential 2024 running mate

According to a new report from CNN, former President Donald Trump is thinking about selecting Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) to be his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.

For its report, CNN cites “multiple GOP sources with direct knowledge of the matter.”

CNN reports these sources as revealing that “conversations about adding Stefanik to a future Trump ticket have gained steam in recent weeks at Mar-a-Lago and in other Republican circles.”

Why Stefanik?

CNN’s sources provided several different reasons. Among them is the fact that Stefanik has become a leading proponent of Trump’s America First agenda.

CNN reports, “one of these people said the former President believes Stefanik has undergone a genuine transformation – leaving the moderate wing of the party to join its increasingly powerful ‘America First’ flank.”

Another source, on the other hand, told CNN that part of the reason why Trump is thinking about selecting Stefanik is that she is a woman.

One source is quoted as saying, “there’s a feeling among a lot of people on the Republican side that they need to have a woman on the ticket this time.”

Nothing is set in stone

CNN does state that Stefanik is only one of the individuals whom Trump is thinking about selecting as his 2024 running mate.

CNN writes that Stefanik is “one of several Republican women [whom Trump] is possibly eyeing for the potential VP slot, though he has not ruled out a few male contenders, too.” The names of the other potential running mates, however, were not provided. It is not clear whether former Vice President Mike Pence is on that list.

Besides the fact that Trump is considering running mates other than Stefanik, it also ought to be pointed out that Trump has yet to even announce his 2024 candidacy. He has made it fairly clear that, at some point, he will. But, that candidacy is not official yet, and so, this running mate talk is a bit on the premature side.

Is Stefanik on board?

Stefanik was asked whether she would team up with Trump in 2024. She chose not to answer the question.

A spokesperson for Stefanik put out a statement, saying, “Congresswoman Stefanik is 100% focused on serving New York’s 21st Congressional District and as House Republican Conference Chair helping lead the efforts to take back the House in 2022 to fire Nancy Pelosi once and for all to save America.”
