During the chaotic evacuation of U.S. citizens and Afghan allies ahead of President Joe Biden’s deadline for a complete military withdrawal from Afghanistan, many expressed concerns that not all of the Afghan evacuees being brought into the U.S. had been thoroughly vetted.
Those fears have turned out to be founded, as according to Townhall, a female U.S. service member was recently assaulted in what was reported to have been a violent attack by a group of male Afghan evacuees.
Attack and probe confirmed
The incident reportedly took place at a facility for Afghan evacuees at Fort Bliss in New Mexico, and the FBI has confirmed that it is investigating what occurred.
“We can confirm a female service member supporting Operation Allies Welcome reported being assaulted on Sept. 19 by a small group of male evacuees at the Doña Ana Complex in New Mexico,” the bureau’s Fort Bliss Public Affairs office said in a statement, according to Townhall.
“We take the allegation seriously and appropriately referred the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the statement continued. “The safety and well-being of our service members, as well as all of those on our installations, is paramount,” it added.
“Task Force-Bliss is also implementing additional security measures to include increased health and safety patrols, additional lighting, and enforcement of the buddy system at the Dona Ana Complex,” the Public Affairs office said. “We will cooperate fully with the FBI and will continue to ensure the service member reporting this assault is fully supported.”
According to Fox News, Special Agent Jeanette Harper of the FBI’s Public Affairs Office confirmed in a statement of her own: “We received the referral from Fort Bliss and our office is investigating the allegation.”
Soldier fine and recovering
Local ABC affiliate KVIA was among the first to report on the assault of the female service member, who reportedly received counseling and medical care immediately following the incident.
Though official details of what occurred are sparse, the outlet reported that unnamed sources described as familiar with what happened said the soldier had been surrounded and attacked by at least three men around midnight when she arrived for duty in her car.
Thankfully, the sources explained, the assault was not sexual in nature, nor were the woman’s injuries severe enough to require hospitalization.
Are they even trying?
Meanwhile, Breitbart reports that halfway across the country, there have been recently two other, unrelated incidents of violence involving male Afghan evacuees at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin that have resulted in criminal charges already — the first involving sexual assault of a minor while the second involved domestic violence.
In light of these allegations, some Republicans are now revisiting their warnings about the need to thoroughly vetting all evacuees from Afghanistan. While such moves may not have prevented all of these incidents, the Biden White House doesn’t even seem to be trying. What gives?
