A newly leaked memo from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) has exposed the truth about the ongoing crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border — and it’s worse than we thought.
According to Yahoo News, an intelligence alert recently issued by CBP pinned the blame for a recent surge in migration squarely on the shoulders of President Joe Biden and his failure to take a strong stance against illegal immigration.
A leak at CBP?
Yahoo News obtained the memo just over a week ago. The outlet said the document, which was not authorized to be released to the public, “suggests some level of disagreement within the government about what exactly is causing the increase” in migration.
According to ABC News, more than 172,000 new migrants crossed into the U.S. through the southern border in March — the most in a single month since the early 2000s.
Citing the memo, Yahoo News reported that CBP has seen a sharp increase in the number of “large group apprehensions,” or apprehensions of groups of 100 or more migrants, at the border since President Donald Trump left office. CBP reportedly “says the surge is ‘largely attributable to perceptions of U.S. immigration policy changes, economic opportunities, elevated violence, and reduced COVID-19 travel restrictions.'”
Asked to comment on the matter, CBP declined to elaborate.
“It is the policy of U.S. Customs and Border Protection to not discuss the validity of any information related to potential unauthorized disclosure of law-enforcement-sensitive documents,” a spokesperson for the agency told Yahoo News.
“Mostly” Biden’s fault
In its own report, TheBlaze cited an anonymous Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official who similarly placed the blame for the situation at the border on the Biden White House.
“Is Biden to blame for all this? Yes, but not exclusively. Is it just Biden administration policy? No, but mostly,” the official said. “Reversing course in regard to policy with no plan in place to handle this surge, that’s the real issue here.”
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the current president of Mexico, has expressed a similar sentiment. “Expectations were created that with the government of President Biden, there would be a better treatment of migrants. And this has caused Central American migrants, and also from our country, wanting to cross the border thinking that it is easier to do so,” he said last month, according to TheBlaze.
Of course, the revelations from CBP and the DHS are not all that surprising. What is surprising, though, is that these remarks are coming directly from the Biden administration, which has been more than hesitant thus far to label the situation at the border as a “crisis.”
At some point, President Biden is going to have to face the music. And by the looks of it, time is quickly running out.
