Rep. Omar’s office area restricted by police after receiving package with mysterious substance

Capitol Hill was buzzing with police activity on Tuesday after an incident occurred at the office of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), which was temporarily placed in a lockdown status while authorities investigated a suspicious package that the progressive lawmaker received.

According to the Washington Examiner, Omar’s office received a package that contained both a mysterious substance and a bizarre threat, which immediately triggered a massive police response.

Omar tweeted about the incident after authorities determined the substance in the package not to be harmful.

Scene cleared

Authorities were able to somewhat quickly determine that the substance in the package wasn’t toxic or harmful, though it wasn’t made immediately clear what, in fact, it actually was.

“An on-site test of the substance was negative for anything hazardous,” Capitol Police said in a statement, USA Today reported.

The outlet added that 2021 has seen a 107% increase in the number of threats toward lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle, compared to threats received in 2020.

Omar followed up her original tweet with a vow to her followers that such threats will not stop her from completing her elected duties, citing the fact that she has been through much worse, adding that she’s “survived war.”

“Three committee hearings, three votes, interviews, rallies, meetings and our day isn’t even halfway done. They can send the threatening emails, phone calls and packages to distract us but nothing will ever slow us down as we serve the people of #MN5. I survived war, I got this,” the Minnesota lawmaker tweeted.

Not the first time

A number of congresspeople have received similar threats and packages in recent years, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who receive a package that ultimately ended up containing a nontoxic substance.

Also last year, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) experienced a similar ordeal to Omar, as his office received a package with an unknown substance. The incidents are taken deadly seriously by authorities after the anthrax scares during the period around 9/11 when such scares were all too common.

Omar reportedly was stopped in the halls by one of her fiercest political opponents, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who told her he was thankful her office was safe.
