Banks’ proposal would block convicted rioters from getting unemployment benefits

Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) just put Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on notice with a new piece of legislation intended to end the rioting that has plagued American cities and destroyed small businesses this summer.

If Banks’ legislation were to pass, it would prevent convicted rioters from receiving unemployment benefits from the federal government.

Hold them accountable

“It’s occurred to me over the last few weeks that it’s not just George Soros and left-wing groups like BLM that are funding many of these riots and mob protests that are turning violent in the streets of America’s cities, but if you think about it, you and I are also funding it in a way,” Banks told Breitbart.

“These protestors, the Antifa thugs that are showing up and causing so much destruction are also getting $600 a week through unemployment benefits through the CARES Act and the federal benefits that have come about through the coronavirus aid. I want to put a stop to it,” the Republican continued.

Banks’ new bill

While many Democrat city leaders are not taking strong action to stop the rioting, Republicans still want to do something to help those who have been negatively impacted by the chaos.

This is the entire point of Rep. Banks’ legislation.

After introducing the bill, Banks, according to a Washington Examiner report, stated, “Antifa thugs are descending on suffering communities, disrupting peaceful protests and leaving violence, looting and vandalism in their wake. They turned Milwaukee, Seattle and Portland into warzones, and now they’re moving the chaos to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Who knows which community is next?”

“Due to enhanced federal benefits, taxpayers are giving wages to jobless rioters that are destroying our communities. We need to cut them off from their funding and make them feel the full financial consequences of their actions.”

Banks also made a plea directly to Pelosi on Twitter…

Unfortunately, the House is controlled by Democrats, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will probably toss it into the shredder as soon as it hits her desk.

But Banks’ points are all valid … if people are knowingly breaking the law, they should not continue to receive taxpayer-funded unemployment benefits.
