It was recently revealed via anonymous leaks to the media that members of Congress received a classified briefing from the intelligence community in which it was reportedly asserted that Russia was already interfering in the 2020 elections in a bid to aid both President Donald Trump as well as socialist Democratic candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). CNN has since walked back the report, and attention has now focused on who leaked the information from the secret briefing.
For many, suspicions have settled on Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and fellow committee member Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX) just accused Schiff of spreading misinformation and helping Russia sow discord among the American people. “And now [Schiff’s] at it again by putting out, through his committee, information that is false,” Ratcliffe said.
Classified briefing revealed via leaks
Ratcliffe’s accusation came during an appearance on Fox News‘ “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo, who asked the Texas congressman about the leaks.
“Well, think about it, Maria. You’re asking me about details of a classified briefing that was intended to remain secret,” Ratcliffe replied. “You’re asking me about it because it’s been reported on by The New York Times.”
“And, you know, it’s all too familiar. We see, when there’s a story about — that is allegedly anti-Trump or negative for the president, it shows up in newspapers, because either Democratic members or Democratic staffers leak it,” he continued. “The problem is, in this case, they have leaked information that’s not accurate.”
Ratcliffe noted that, despite a narrative to the contrary from Democrats and the media, Republicans like him were well aware of Russian efforts to meddle in the 2016 elections as well as in the upcoming 2020 elections, but suggested that Russia’s attempts at meddling in and of itself weren’t the main issue of concern.
Their biggest allies
“The issue is why Russia is being so successful in shaking American confidence — confidence in the integrity of our elections,” Ratcliffe said. “And the reason is, it’s because Democrats keep perpetuating and accentuating and proliferating Russian propaganda for their political gain and for their political motivation against Donald Trump.”
He pointed out that it was Democrats who helped concoct the debunked Steele dossier that served as the basis for years of false innuendo and investigation against Trump about Russian collusion, and that it was Democrats like Schiff who defended the FBI’s now-exposed abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court to spy on then-candidate Trump’s campaign in 2016.
“All of these things have been done by Democrats to really — for their political gain, but has promoted everything that Russia has tried to accomplish. And the Democrats have been their biggest allies,” Ratcliffe said.
Ratcliffe: Schiff is at it again
Bartiromo brought up Schiff and his involvement in those things mentioned by Ratcliffe, to which the congressman replied, “Well, you — as you point out Maria, I mean, Adam Schiff has been among the worst offenders here, falsely accusing the president of conspiring with Russia.”
“Look, I’m not trying to be hyperbolic here, but I don’t know anyone in the last three years who has done more to help Vladimir Putin and Russia with their efforts to sow the seeds of discord in American elections and American election security than Adam Schiff has,” Ratcliffe said.
