Rand Paul says Fauci ‘lied to the American people’ about gain of function research in China

If you ask Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Dr. Anthony Fauci could soon be in serious trouble.

According to Breitbart, the Kentucky senator leveled a massive accusation against President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, claiming that the infectious disease expert is not telling the truth about America’s role in funding “gain of function” research at a Wuhan lab in China, where many believe the COVID-19 virus might have originated.

What did he say?

In a recent interview on Real America’s Voice’s The Water Cooler show, Paul was asked if he believes Fauci “perjured himself” by denying that the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which oversees Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), played a role in funding gain of function research at the Wuhan laboratory.

“Absolutely, he lied to the America people. There was gain of function research going on with Dr. Shi Zhengli at the Wuhan Institute,” Paul responded.

Paul backed his claim by pointing to a thank you note included at the end of Dr. Zhengli’s paper on the subject.

“It’s listed at the end of the paper,” Paul said. “This paper was fined by NIAID research and it lists a ten digit number that identifies the research money she got from the United States. Was it gain of function?”

Paul then pointed to evidence which he believes clearly proves that gain of function research took place, saying “it took a SARS virus, which is a coronavirus, that’s 15 times more deadly than COVID, and it added to it S protein, which is something in the surface of it, to make it more easily infectious to epithelial cells for the respiratory tract. That to me is gain of function.”

Fauci under fire

Fauci also recently flip-flopped on his statements regarding the origin of the virus. Originally, the infectious disease expert said he was all but certain that the virus emerged naturally.

But on Monday, The Hill reported that Fauci told a Politifact reporter that he is no longer “convinced” that the virus emerged naturally and believes the Wuhan theory needs further investigation.

“I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened,” Fauci said.

Whether or not Fauci finds himself in legal trouble over the matter is anyone’s guess, but as new details of COVID’s origins continue to emerge, there’s no telling what the future holds for him.
