Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has frequently come under fire over the past year for his administration’s policy regarding nursing homes early on in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, Politico is reporting that some New York Republicans are calling for him to potentially be removed from office over it.
A report from New York Attorney General Letitia James provided new context into the controversial policy, affirming that the Cuomo administration drastically underreported the number of nursing home residents who died from the virus.
The policy itself was enacted in March and soon meant recovering COVID-19 patients were returning to nursing homes and other facilities, where the virus could spread rapidly among one of the most at-risk populations. Another bombshell revelation came on Thursday with reports of a private call between Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa and a group of state lawmakers.
As the New York Post reported, DeRosa acknowledged during the conversation that the Cuomo administration decided to cover up the severity of the nursing home scandal. Nevertheless, she found a way to blame former President Donald Trump.
In any case, state Republican Party Chairman Nick Langworthy is among those in his party calling for a thorough probe. “Prosecution and impeachment discussions must begin right away,” he said, according to Politico.
DeRosa reportedly complained that Trump “starts tweeting that we killed everyone in nursing homes” before going after individual Democratic governors.
“And basically, we froze,” she said, according to the New York Post. “Because then we were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation.”
“The biggest bombshell”
The Post report went on to note some of the bipartisan condemnation that followed the revelation.
“This is the biggest bombshell we have had so far,” said Fox News senior meteorologist Janice Dean. “We had a trickling in of the numbers. We knew the numbers were much bigger than the governor was admitting. Over 15,000 residents died from getting COVID in their nursing homes…and now the biggest bombshell coming from the New York Post that his secretary, Melissa DeRosa admitted that they covered it all up.”
Her perspective is especially compelling due to the fact that she lost both her parents-in-law, New Yorkers who would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year, to the virus.
“Justice needs to be served,” Dean concluded, according to Fox. “We don’t have our loved ones here today, but by God, I am here to be a voice for all of them.”
