A perplexing South Carolina murder mystery just took another odd twist leading to more questions than answers.
Reports indicate prominent attorney Alex Murdaugh announced this week that he would be resigning from his family’s law firm and checking himself into a rehab facility.
“An incredibly difficult time in my life”
The revelation came just two days after he was reportedly shot in the head while changing a tire on the side of a road — and about three months after he discovered the bodies of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, after they were fatally shot at a family-owned property.
Details in the case are scarce and no arrests have been made in either of the shooting incidents.
Speculation has swirled regarding whether the recent violent crimes were related to a fatal 2019 alcohol-involved boating accident that led to charges of boating under the influence for Paul Murdaugh. Another unsolved murder in 2015 has also been tentatively linked to the latest developments.
According to WCSC, Alex Murdaugh’s sudden resignation and rehab announcements appear to stem directly from accusations that he had been diverting legal fees for his own purposes as well as allegations of a substance abuse problem.
“The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life,” he said in a statement. “I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret.”
“I ask for prayers”
Without offering specifics, Murdaugh added: “I’m resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated these murders. I am immensely sorry to everyone I’ve hurt including my family, friends, and colleagues. I ask for prayers as I rehabilitate myself and my relationships.”
A timeline compiled by WJCL begins with the 2015 death of 19-year-old Stephen Smith, though it is unclear how or if that case is related to the events that followed.
The boating accident in February 2019 resulted in the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach and criminal charges — along with wrongful death lawsuits by Beach’s family — against Paul Murdaugh.
Three days after mediation in the wrongful death suits were said to have failed, the bullet-ridden bodies of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh were discovered and an investigation was launched into what was deemed a double homicide.
Last week, Alex Murdaugh sustained a “superficial wound” to his head when a shot allegedly came from a passing truck. He has since been released from the hospital, but his resignation from the prominent law firm started by his great-grandfather more than a century ago is just the latest chapter in this continuing saga.
