Progressive group launches anti-Biden mobile billboard campaign with ‘Don’t Run Joe’ message

President Joe Biden has repeatedly hinted, though has yet to make it official, that he intends to seek a second term in 2024 — but it would appear that not everybody affiliated with the Democratic Party is thrilled at that prospect.

A progressive leftist organization has recently begun to operate mobile billboards in and around Washington D.C. that bear a simple message in opposition to the idea of another term for Biden in the White House, the Western Journal reported.

That message, expressed in just six words, is: “Most Democrats Say Don’t Run Joe.”

Unmistakeable message for the president

The organization behind the anti-Biden mobile billboards is known as RootsAction, and it first launched its “Don’t Run Joe” campaign last year, according to Fox News.

Initially, the progressive group aired strategic ads in some of the early primary states viewed as important to the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination process, including New Hampshire, Georgia, Michigan, and South Carolina.

Now, however, the group has moved on to stage the mobile billboards in various locations around Washington D.C., including in front of the White House and Capitol building as well as near some of the highly-trafficked memorials.

In a statement to Fox News, a co-founder of RootsAction, Jeff Cohen, said, “We don’t believe Biden will be the strongest candidate to defeat an extremist Republican in 2024 — and we’re urging him not to run through petitions, columns, TV ads, and now this mobile billboard circling the White House and Capitol Hill.”

Polls do show a majority of Democrats don’t want Biden to run again

The “Don’t Run Joe” campaign issued a press release on Tuesday to announce the mobile billboards that followed TV ads in the D.C.-area that aired last week.

“We strongly urge President Biden to announce that he won’t seek re-nomination,” Sam Rosenthal, the political director of RootsAction, said in a statement. “An open Democratic primary could chart a bolder, more popular future for the party — and 2020 showed that, after a wide-open process, Democrats can unite to defeat the right-wing threat in November 2024.”

That press release also pointed to a handful of recent national polls, which echo prior polls over the past year, which showed that around 60 percent of Democratic voters would prefer somebody other than Biden to be the party’s presidential nominee in the 2024 election.

Biden has “no automatic right to renomination”

The “Don’t Run Joe” campaign also launched a website last year as part of its effort to dissuade the “moderate” President Biden from seeking a second term amid high stakes and threat posed by “neofascist” Republicans, and includes a link to a petition for like-minded progressives to add their voice to the overall message.

“Bold and inspiring leadership from the Oval Office will be essential,” the group stated. “Unfortunately, President Biden has been neither bold nor inspiring. And his prospects for winning re-election appear to be bleak. With so much at stake, making him the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer in 2024 would be a tragic mistake.”

“A president is not his party’s king, and he has no automatic right to renomination. Joe Biden should not seek it. If he does, he will have a fight on his hands,” the anti-Biden campaign added.
