Embattled Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is desperately clinging to his post. But many say he’s a dead man walking, politically-speaking.
“Democrats are not defending Northam. They will be rid of him before the Super Bowl is over, for a number of reasons,” predicted Fox News contributor Bill Bennett, a conservative pundit and politician. Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe also said Sunday that he expects Northam to “put Virginia first” and resign “soon.”
Dems drop Northam
After a photo from his medical school yearbook surfaced on Friday, featuring one person in blackface and another in a KKK costume, prominent Democrats including former Vice President Joe Biden and 2020 presidential contenders Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kamala Harris of California called on him to step down. “He must resign,” former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Saturday.
A number of Democratic House members have also spoken out against Northam, as have most of his fellow Democrats within the state of Virginia. Even abortion giant Planned Parenthood abandoned him, saying Northam should “resign immediately.”
He’s a liability
In an op-ed for Fox News, Bennett noted there were several reasons why Democrats would move quickly to get rid of Northam, some more cynical than others. The 1984 yearbook photo itself is shocking, and would be a career-killer for any politician.
Northam’s successor, Bennett pointed out, would be the popular young African-American Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax — a welcome change in optics for the identity-obsessed party.
The third reason is that forcing Northam to resign would divert attention away from his comments last week on a “40-week abortion” bill, in which he suggested abortion could take place after birth:
If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.
The apparent reference to infanticide shocked the nation, though most prominent elected Democrats feigned ignorance when asked to respond to his remarks and the media downplayed its coverage. The logical conclusion of the legalized abortion argument isn’t something its advocates ever want to talk about.
Change the subject
Sadly, Bennett said, there are plenty of Democrats who don’t have a problem with Northam’s position on abortion … they just don’t want to have to defend it in public.
It certainly explains Planned Parenthood’s call for his resignation. They’ve worked hard to brand themselves as a “women’s health care provider” instead of an “abortion provider” and they certainly don’t want Northam bringing the conversation back around to “killing babies.”
The photo, then, became an opportunity for Democrats to turn the conversation from abortion to racism — something the left is more than happy to talk about all the time. Northam has become a liability to the party and the photo is a perfect opportunity to dump him.
If Democrats fail to push Northam out of office, they will be exposed as hypocrites on the racism issue. Worse, the 2020 presidential candidates will be forced to answer pointed questions about his abortion comments. But if they succeed in ousting him, they can go back to falsely claiming they are the “non-racist” political party while quietly supporting extreme abortion policies.
