Polls shows Biden’s ‘Putin price hike’ ploy isn’t working

A new poll suggests that Americans aren’t buying President Joe Biden’s attempt to spin the inflation they are seeing as “Putin’s price hike,” Newsweek reports

The poll comes from Investors Business Daily/TIPP. In the poll, Biden’s approval rating came in at a dismal 39%. That is, only 39% of adults currently approve of the job that Biden is doing as president. 47% disapprove.

It appears that Biden’s handling of the economy is a large part of the reason why his approval numbers are so poor.

The pollster found that only 29% of participants indicated that they approve of Biden’s handling of the economy. Roughly 50% disapproved.

Just this week, the Department of Labor released its latest consumer price index report. For those unfamiliar with it, the consumer price index “is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.”

What the Labor Department’s report shows is that, in April 2022, inflation went up 8.3% from where it was in April 2021. This means that, under President Joe Biden’s leadership, inflation remains at nearly a 40-year-high.

These numbers, themselves, might not mean a whole lot to those of us without an economics background. Moody’s Analytics provides more perspective.

An analysis by Moody’s Analytics indicates that the average American is paying roughly $311 more per month as a direct result of the inflation we are witnessing.

Biden’s spin

President Biden has been attempting to pin a large part of the blame for the economic crisis on Russian President Vladimir Putin and his war on Ukraine. Biden has kept this narrative up for more than a month now.

“What people don’t know is that 70 percent of the increase in inflation was the consequence of Putin’s price hike because of the impact on oil prices—70 percent,” Biden said in April.

Biden was at it again this week, saying, “all of this is progress, but the fight against global supply chain issues related to the pandemic and Putin’s price hike will continue every day.”

As the polls go to show, Americans aren’t buying it. Biden’s average approval rating currently sits at 41.4%, according to Real Clear Politics, and polls have consistently shown that Biden’s failure with the American economy is the bulk of the reason why.
