If President Joe Biden thought Americans were pleased with how he’s handling a recent surge in migration at the U.S. southern border, the results of a new poll likely left him blindsided.
According to a new survey from Fox News, almost half of American voters now say that border security is worse today than it was two years ago — nearly three times the number of respondents who said the same back in 2018, when Donald Trump was president. And that’s not the only bad news Biden has to contend with on the polling front.
Crunching the numbers
The Fox poll, taken from April 18-21, surveyed just over 1,000 registered voters on topics including health care, foreign policy, the COVID-19 pandemic, and border security and immigration.
On that last issue, voters were clear in their discontent. According to Fox, a full 46% of respondents said security at the border is worse now than it was two years ago, and only 15% said border security has improved in that time frame.
Another third of respondents said they felt things have remained about the same.
When the same poll was taken in June 2018, under Trump’s reign, just 17% of those surveyed said border security had worsened since two years prior, signaling that most voters felt the 45th president had been making progress on that front — progress that Biden abruptly stunted with orders halting construction of a wall at the border and walking back the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum-seekers, among other things.
Perhaps that’s why more voters disapprove than approve of Biden’s job performance on immigration, according to Fox; a full 52% of respondents to the outlet’s latest survey said they aren’t happy with Biden’s immigration policies, while just over a third approved. On border security, “over half disapprove,” Fox said.
More bad news for Biden
The poll comes as Biden is nearing his 100th day as president — but as voters look back on what he’s done in just over three months in office, they don’t seem all that impressed. Biden has drawn ire from both Republicans and Democrats for his handling of the border situation, which the White House still won’t call a “crisis.”
What’s more, Fox’s isn’t the only poll to have exposed Americans’ true feelings about Biden’s border agenda. According to Breitbart, a Washington Post/ABC News poll published Sunday found that a full 53% of Americans disapprove of Biden’s immigration policies.
Only 37% of those surveyed said they support the president’s take on the border.
Overall, Biden’s approval rating is currently sitting around 52%. Breitbart reports that this is the third-lowest approval rating any modern president has had at his 100-day mark, besting only Trump and Gerald Ford.
With that, it seems that at least so far, Biden’s tenure in the White House has been nowhere near the dream of a presidency that many on the left claimed it would be. Far from it, in fact.
