Some progressives have been reluctant to loosen mask restrictions in response to updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A new poll, however, shows that a clear majority of Americans are excited about the idea of ditching their masks in accordance with the latest CDC guidelines.
Vaccine confidence remains high
Rasmussen Reports conducted the survey between May 17-18, shortly after the CDC advised that fully vaccinated Americans were safe to take off their masks in most public situations.
Pollsters contacted 1,000 U.S. adults and the results come with a margin of error of about 3%.
One question asked respondents if they agreed with the CDC’s most recent guidance, with 64% declaring that they “strongly” or “somewhat” agreed.
Breaking those numbers down by political affiliation, 71% of Republicans, 64% of Democrats, and 60% of independents expressed some level of support for the new rules.
The poll also asked if participants were confident in the “safety and effectiveness” of the COVID-19 vaccines currently available.
“The honor system”
Again, a majority of respondents across party lines signaled their approval, with about two in three saying they were “very” or “somewhat” confident in the medicine. Democrats were far more likely to express confidence with more than 8 in 10 falling into that category compared to 55% of Republicans.
Rasmussen further found that 58% of respondents reported receiving the vaccine — including 71% of Democrats and 51% of Republicans.
The CDC has served as a boost to that confidence with its latest guidelines, but at least some on the left were not pleased. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), for example, has resisted calls to lift her strict mask mandate despite the new guidelines and the fact that roughly 75% of lawmakers have been fully vaccinated.
“What is this, the honor system?” she asked on Thursday, according to Breitbart. “The honor system, as to whether someone has been vaccinated? Do you want them breathing in your face on the strength of their honor?”
As Rasmussen’s latest polling results demonstrate, however, most Americans seem to be on board with the relaxed CDC guidelines as a hopeful signal that the nation is steadily heading toward a post-COVID normal. Thus far in the continuing vaccination effort, roughly 126 million Americans — or about 38% of the total population — have already been fully inoculated against the virus.
