Authorities have released more information about the attack that was recently carried out on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
The suspect in the attack, according to Fox News, has now been identified as 42-year-old David DePape.
Details about the attack
According to authorities, DePape broke into Pelosi’s home in San Francisco, California, early on Friday morning. Mr. Pelosi managed to contact the police, and they responded at 2:27 a.m.
The police arrived to find DePape, in his underwear, fighting with Pelosi over a hammer. The suspect ended up taking the hammer and striking Pelosi with it at least once.
Both men were taken to the hospital. Pelosi needed surgery for his injuries, which included a fractured skull. That surgery was successful, and Pelosi is expected to make a full recovery.
DePape was arrested and charged with numerous crimes, including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and “several other additional felonies.”
An investigation into what happened is being conducted by the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s office, U.S. Capitol Police, and the local police. The big question now is what motivated DePape to attack Pelosi.
What we know about DePape:
We still do not know DePape’s precise motivation. San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said that it is “still being determined.”
But, some things about DePape have been revealed, things that would suggest that DePape may have had a political motivation in attacking Pelosi.
It is being reported, for example, that DePape, upon breaking into Pelosi’s home, demanded to see Speaker Pelosi. It is further being reported that DePape wrote a manifesto that contained conspiracy theories that are described as far to the right politically and that DePape planned to target several other politicians, although we don’t know who those politicians are.
In addition to this, DePape’s “former life partner” has described DePape as being “mentally ill for a long time” and as once coming home thinking that he is Jesus. It ought to be noted that this former life partner is Oxane Taub, the California nudist activist, also known as Gypsy, who is currently behind bars.
There are still many, many unanswered questions about the situation, not just about DePape’s motivation but about how he gained access to Pelosi’s home. For now, the investigation continues.
