Planned Parenthood calls for SCOTUS court packing

Planned Parenthood officially threw its weight behind the Democratic party's dormant push to pack the Supreme Court.

The pro-abortion group echoed familiar grievances with the right's takeover of the court, which has deprived liberals of a powerful tool for imposing their agenda on the country.

Planned Parenthood president Alexis McGill Johnson called for sweeping "reforms" so the courts will "uphold hard-won freedoms and advance justice for future generations."

Planned Parenthood wants court packing

The left has continuously sowed doubts about the court's integrity after it shifted to the right under President Trump, and especially after the conservative majority voted to overturn Roe v. Wade last June.

Rather than accept the court's decision, leftists want to tip over the game board, as Johnson made clear in a sweeping statement condemning the Supreme Court for its failure to advance the leftist vision of "democracy."

Johnson called for court packing and term limits, saying the reforms are needed to "ensure that everyone, no matter where they live, has the freedom to make their own decisions about their own bodies, lives, and futures."

"Instead, the courts have been used as a vehicle to advance a dangerous agenda against abortion rights, voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and so much more,” she wrote.

The left's latest push

The justices themselves, both liberal and conservative, have poured cold water on court packing, calling it a dangerous proposal. But Johnson said court packing is "integral to building the public’s trust."

It's a common theme among liberals who argue the Supreme Court has drifted from public opinion on abortion and "ethics." For weeks, Democrats have sought to build pressure for their reforms by stoking controversy about Justice Clarence Thomas' friendship with a Republican donor, Harlan Crow.

President Biden infamously refused to rule out court packing before the 2020 presidential election, but he hasn't prioritized it since. Still, Biden has gone to extraordinary lengths to defy the court's authority, while condemning its conservative justices as "extreme."

"Make no mistake: This decision is the culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to upset the balance of our law," he said after Roe's repeal. "It's a realization of an extreme ideology and a tragic error by the Supreme Court, in my view."

Biden has pushed to codify Roe into law, while attacking Republican proposals to restrict abortion nationwide.
