New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has taken a lot of flak lately over his controversial policy on nursing homes that came amid the worst of the coronavirus outbreak in the Big Apple. But it’s likely nothing has made him more furious than this latest act of protest.
According to the New York Post, a plane flew along the coast of New York on Saturday with a banner attached to it that read: “THE GOV KILLED NANA.”
Cuomo’s big blunder
The big mystery in New York these days is just how many people died in nursing homes from COVID-19 due to Cuomo’s failed policies.
Early on in the pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that patients who still tested positive for the disease after receiving treatment should only return to extended living facilities if they could be separated from others there. It seemed like a logical recommendation, especially as those in nursing homes are likely to be part of the population most at risk for complications from the coronavirus.
But Cuomo didn’t follow that advice. The Associated Press reports:
A controversial March 25 order [from Cuomo] to send recovering COVID-19 patients from hospitals into nursing homes that was designed to free up hospital bed space at the height of the pandemic has drawn withering criticism from relatives and patient advocates who contend it accelerated nursing home outbreaks.
The AP said “Cuomo reversed the order under pressure in early May” — but it may have been too late.
And according to the AP, “New York’s coronavirus death toll in nursing homes, already among the highest in the nation, could actually be a significant undercount.”
“Nothing but a liar”
It all comes as just the latest blow to Cuomo and his administration, which has been doing its best to fight back against the criticism. Reacting to the banner accusing Cuomo of “killing nana,” spokesperson Rich Azzopardi blamed conspiracy theorists.
“Everyone knows this governor has worked day in and day out to protect all New Yorkers,” he said, according to the New York Post, “and that’s why these sad politically motivated lies always land with a thud and I have no comment on how conspiracy nuts want to waste their money.”
It remains to be seen whether New Yorkers share that opinion.
One person on the beach Saturday told the New York Post that “people were going crazy” when the plane donning an anti-Cuomo banner flew by.
“[Cuomo] is nothing but a liar, condescending and miserable person,” the individual said, according to the Post. “His carelessness caused the death of a lot of people unnecessarily.”
