As the massive manhunt for Brian Laundrie continues, Gabby Petito’s parents broke their silence on the horrific matter in a bombshell interview over the weekend, during which they held nothing back regarding how they feel about Laundrie and his parents.
According to Fox News, Petito’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, along with her father, Joseph Petito, and step-father, Jim Schmidt, sat down for an interview with 60 Minutes Australia and said that they believe Laundrie’s parents are aware of “most of the information” surrounding their daughter’s tragic death, “if not everything.”
It was in late August that Petito’s parents made their last contact with their daughter — a travel blogger — while she was on a cross-country trip with Laundrie. On Sept. 11, Petito’s mother formally reported her as missing to law enforcement.
On Sept. 19, her parents received the unthinkable news that Petito’s remains had been discovered at a camping area in Bridger-Teton National Forest, which is located in Moose, Wyoming.
For the first time since the case made national headlines, Petito’s parents, including her step-father, made clear that they believe Laundrie’s parents, who have made several bizarre moves during the unfolding of the case, know more than they’re letting on.
“I think silence speaks volumes,” Nicole Schmidt said of Laundrie’s parents. “I believe they know…if not everything, they know most of the information. I would love to just — face to face — ask, ‘Why are you doing this? Just tell me the truth.'”
Her father, Joseph Petito, described the ongoing situation as “torturous” and “cruel.”
He said during the interview, “You’d think there’d be some conversations,” adding, “If Brian was staying at my house and Gabby returned to my house without him in his vehicle, I’d be on the phone with [his] parents saying, ‘Listen, we’ve got an issue. … We’ve got some stuff to talk about, like, now.'”
Joseph Petito was referring to Laundrie’s parents apparently not raising flags after Gabby failed to return to their home with Brian Laundrie, where he was living at the time. Even more bizarre, the family embarked on a camping trip shortly after he returned home without his girlfriend.
The manhunt continues
Brian Laundrie was officially reported missing on Sept. 17, just two days before Gabby Petito’s body was discovered. Though federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies have received thousands of leads, none of them have obviously got them any closer to locating the missing man, if he’s still alive.
The missing Laundrie is still only considered a “person of interest” in Gabby Petito’s disappearance, even after a coroner revealed that she died by homicide as a result of strangulation, as the New York Post previously reported.
As Fox noted, Brian Laundrie is officially a fugitive on the run, as the FBI charged him with fraud as he allegedly used a Capital One debit card to withdraw $1,000 from an ATM, with many believing that it was Gabby Petito’s card.
