Support for a petition demanding the resignation of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), is growing rapidly, Breitbart reported.
Amid the ongoing pandemic, the WHO is facing criticism for its repeated failures in warning the rest of the world in a timely fashion about the deadly coronavirus.
932,000 signatures and counting
The petition, which had more than 932,000 signatures as of Monday afternoon, pointed out the delays of the WHO in declaring the new coronavirus a global health emergency until late January and detailed how the director-general downplayed the risks posed by the pandemic.
“We strongly think Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is not fit for his role as WHO Director General. We call for the Immediate Resignation of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,” the petition stated.
The petition further noted that the WHO is supposed to be a “political neutral,” yet, “without any investigation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus solely believes on the death and infected numbers that the Chinese government provided with them.”
In addition to calling for Tedros’ resignation, the petition also demanded that Taiwan — whose warnings were ignored early on by the WHO when it raised concerns about the developing problem in China — be included in the organization going forward. China has long blocked Taiwan’s inclusion.
Republican lawmakers have questions
A number of U.S. lawmakers in the House and Senate, as well as President Donald Trump, have also voiced criticism of the WHO, with some also suggesting that Tedros ought to resign, largely due to his increasingly obvious obsequiousness toward China and unquestioning acceptance of the communist regime’s dubious claims regarding the extent of the epidemic within its borders.
Fox News reported that a letter was sent to Tedros on Thursday from the Republican members of the House Oversight Committee that, while not specifically calling for his resignation, posed a series of pointed questions for him to answer and requested a variety of documents be turned over.
“Despite the WHO’s purported mission to operate as an apolitical international institution within the United Nations, recent media reports suggest that the WHO helped Beijing disseminate propaganda, downplayed the extent of the disease, and possibly delayed ordering a public health emergency,” the Republicans’ letter stated. “Given the actions and statements of WHO officials during the past few months, we are concerned that the WHO is no longer serving the needs of the world and is instead taking its cues from China.”
“Throughout the crisis, the WHO has shied away from placing any blame on the Chinese government, which is in essence the Communist Party of China,” the letter continued. “You, as leader of the WHO, even went so far as to praise the Chinese government’s ‘transparency’ during the crisis, when, in fact, the regime has consistently lied to the world by underreporting their actual infection and death statistics.”
The letter proceeded to spell out several examples of the WHO either accepting at face value or overlooking China’s dishonesty, such as in regard to human-to-human transmission of the virus, the delay in declaring the virus a global emergency, the opposition to travel restrictions against China, and the organization’s continued praise for China’s response to the virus when it is abundantly clear to all that the regime has been anything but transparent with the rest of the world.
It’s time for Tedros and the WHO to be held accountable.
