The situation in Venezuela has grown incredibly dire in recent days as opposers of Nicolas Maduro’s oppressive, socialist regime have taken to the streets to call for military support. But while those protesters were met with violent suppression by the ruling forces, the Trump administration has made it clear that it supports the opposition, led by democratically elected leader Juan Guaido.
Meanwhile, Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar appears to have aligned herself with the Maduro regime, accusing America of being a “bully” toward the socialist dictator who is brutally oppressing his people. And now, Vice President Mike Pence is calling her out on it.
Bullying The Bully
The U.K.’s Daily Mail reported that Omar expressed support for Maduro on Wednesday in an interview with far-left media outlet Democracy Now!
“A lot of the policies that [U.S. politicians] have put in place has kind of helped lead the devastation in Venezuela, and we sort of set the stage for where we are arriving today,” Omar said.
She went on: “This particular bullying and the use of sanctions to eventually intervene and make regime change, really does not help the people of countries like Venezuela, and it certainly is not in the interest of the United States.”
Socialism over Freedom?
Of course, there is glaring hypocrisy in Omar’s critique of sanctions against Venezuela while she adamantly supports imposing sanctions on Israel…and her apparent support for the authoritarian dictator Maduro while staunchly opposing the supposed authoritarian dictator she accuses President Donald Trump of being.
But luckily, our vice president isn’t afraid to call it like it is. In response to Omar’s remarks, Pence tweeted:
Pence’s rebuke of Omar was echoed by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who addressed her comments briefly during an interview on Fox News, according to the Daily Mail.
“The nicest thing I could say is it’s unbelievable ignorance, it’s factually wrong. The problems of Venezuela have been years in the making,” Pompeo said. “For a member of Congress to make a statement blaming America for it in this way, it’s not only ignorance, it’s disgusting.”
Once again, the left’s knee-jerk opposition to all things Trump has compelled at least one illogical Democrat to openly embrace a socialist dictator who has economically ruined a nation, starved his people, violently silenced the media and opposition, and murdered dissenters that rise against him.
To avoid being on the same side as Trump on a particular issue, Democrats like Omar are discounting the freedom of the Venezuelan people.
What a shame.
