Kentucky congressman likens Pelosi’s plan for coronavirus relief to ‘liberal Christmas wishlist’

Americans — many of whom have lost their small businesses and their jobs due to repeated lockdown attempts by power-hungry governors — have demanded for months that Congress come through with another round of relief amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But that much-needed help has repeatedly been stalled by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat who wants all sorts of unnecessary items added to a relief bill — and she’s shown no signs of backing down.

According to Breitbart, Republican Rep. James Comer (KY) exposed the truth during a recent Fox News appearance: a stimulus bill won’t be coming during the lame-duck session of Congress, he said, because Pelosi is determined to pass a “liberal Christmas wishlist” that the government “just can’t afford.”

Now and then

As Breitbart reported, Comer made clear during his talk with Fox that Republicans are more than willing to pass another COVID-19 relief bill, but this time around, he said they know how to fine-tune such a bill so that it offers the most help where it’s most needed.

That’s in stark contrast to the original round of coronavirus-related bills, which were more of the liberal-favored “blanket” approaches that essentially tossed out money to everyone, everywhere, Comer said.

“I think another stimulus bill is necessary, but this one needs to be targeted,” the Republican told Fox, according to Breitbart.

“The last bill was a blanket bill,” he explained. “When it was passed, we had no idea how serious the COVID pandemic would be. We didn’t know which businesses would be hurt the most.”

Comer said there is now bipartisan agreement on industries like the restaurant and bar business, which has suffered through multiple, revenue-killing lockdowns over the past nine months.

“But we have a situation in Washington where Nancy Pelosi, she doesn’t want to do targeted stimulus,” the Kentucky congressman complained, as Breitbart reported. “She wants to do another blanket stimulus bill and give money to everyone and forgive student loan debt and just a liberal Christmas wishlist that’s just not going to happen, because we just can’t afford it.”

What Pelosi wants

According to Newsweek, Pelosi and House Democrats passed the $2.2 trillion Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus and Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act in October, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and other Senate Republicans do not believe that’s the sort of bill that will truly help Americans at this time.

Republicans have blamed Democrats for stalled negotiations, saying Dems are not willing to compromise and dial in the bill to where relief is needed the most without giving state and local governments hundreds of billions of dollars for problems that Republicans say have nothing to do with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, Pelosi seemed to reenergize her ambitions to work toward passing a new bill with a letter to McConnell offering a $1.2 trillion package as a compromise Newsweek reported. But that offer was still met with resistance, with Senate Republicans leaning toward an amount in the range of $500 billion.

It remains to be seen if and when the two chambers of Congress will make a deal — but for the good of all Americans, one can only hope Pelosi comes to her senses sooner than later.
