Pelosi calls for 'broken asylum system' to be reformed

 January 8, 2024

U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is calling for the United States' "broken asylum system" to be reformed.

Pelosi, according to the Washington Examiner, made the call during an appearance Sunday on ABC's This Week.

A focus of the interview was the ongoing southern border crisis. Under President Joe Biden's leadership, the country continues to witness record illegal immigration numbers.

Pelosi, the former speaker of the House, suggested, during the interview, that reforming America's asylum system would help to solve the southern border crisis.

"We must secure our border"

It must be an election year because Pelosi actually said these words during the interview.

"We must secure our border. That’s for sure. There’s no question about that," Pelosi said.

From there, Pelosi went on to make a push for asylum reform. She said:

But we also must honor our responsibilities in terms of asylum and the rest, and the president has that in his proposal, and what they say is, "Oh, it won’t make a difference." No, it will make a difference. Let’s get the job done. Let’s do it soon, and we certainly are not going to shut down government.

Pelosi, here, was referring to the fact that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has warned Americans that, if Congress cannot come up with a solution to the southern border crisis, then the Republicans will use their majority to shut the government down.

Pelosi, in the interview, attempted to make the Republicans out to be the bad guys - to make it look as though the Democrats want to solve the southern border crisis whereas the Republicans will not let them. What is left unstated, of course, is that Pelosi and the Democrats' solution is not a real solution to the problem.

Record numbers

During the 2023 fiscal year, which ended in September 2023, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had a record 2.4 million illegal immigrant encounters.

This was despite the fact that the Biden administration, during the 2023 fiscal year, implemented policies that were supposed to drive the illegal immigration numbers down.

Now, it is looking as though Fiscal Year 2024 could be even worse than 2023. In December, alone, the CBP had over 302,000 illegal immigrant encounters, which is another record.

It must be remembered that such numbers only represent the illegal immigrants with whom the CBP came in contact. Experts say that there are many others who manage to sneak into America without being detected by the CBP.

Of those immigrants with whom the CPB does come in contact, it is said that over 70% are being released into America.
