As coronavirus relief negotiations in Congress began to stall, President Donald Trump warned Democrats that they needed to stop playing games, or he would take action on his own.
True to his word, President Trump issued a series of executive orders addressing key areas of stimulus concern, causing a clearly perturbed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to fire back an interview with Fox News’ Chris Wallace.
“These are illusions”
Though it is certainly true that Wallace regularly gives Republicans a hard time when he gets them in the interview chair, he is notorious for letting Democrats off the hook when they appear on his show.
That narrative changed a bit this week when the House speaker joined him on Fox News Sunday.
Wallace hit Pelosi on two different fronts this week, and she embarrassed herself both times.
Trump warned Democrats that they needed to come to the table in good faith, but they refused, and while Pelosi remained confident in her ability to drive the discussions, Trump outmaneuvered her and her colleagues by issuing four executive orders.
When Wallace suggested that Pelosi essentially blew the negotiations, she was not amused, replying, “Well, clearly, you don’t have an understanding of what is happening here,” as the Washington Examiner reported.
She stated, “While it has the illusion of saying we’re going to have a moratorium on evictions, it says I’m gonna ask the folks in charge to study if that’s feasible,” adding, “While he says he’s going to do the payroll tax, what he’s doing is undermining Social Security and Medicare, so these are illusions.”
Not done yet
Wallace wasn’t finished with Pelosi just yet, though, because he hit her again by questioning the speaker on a recent intelligence community report suggesting that China and Iran are pulling for a Joe Biden win in November.
If Pelosi had any respectability left, she lost it when, in response to Wallace’s questions, she tried to downplay allegations of election interference from China and Iran while attempting to tout that same report’s finding that Russia would prefer to see President Trump re-elected.
Pelosi is perfectly willing to mislead Americans into thinking that Beijing and Tehran pose no threat to the integrity of our election, but that Russia represents the real danger.
Conservatives are opposed to all manner of foreign interference in the American election system, but Pelosi seems to be okay with it — as long as it helps her guy.
