House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has earned the ire of many and the admiration of some by openly displaying her disgust for Trump for all to see during Tuesday’s State of the Union address.
Pelosi reportedly just went on a rant about the incident during her weekly press conference, even attacking Trump’s health by saying he looked “sedated” while giving his speech.
The gamesmanship between Pelosi and Trump started before Trump even took the podium. Pelosi broke protocol when introducing Trump, showing everyone in the country that it was game on.
Trump landed the next blow, refusing to shake Pelosi’s hand when he handed her a copy of the SOTU address, a document some claim is an official document and thus should not be destroyed.
Now, it should be noted Trump did not shake Vice President Pence’s hand either. Some think this was a purposeful move to justify not shaking Pelosi’s hand, others think he simply did not see her extended hand in the first place.
When the speech was over but before Trump left the dais, Pelosi shredded her copy of the SOTU address in plain view of the cameras, which most agree was a complete blunder by Pelosi. By the end of the week, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) had filed an ethics complaint against Pelosi and even hinted Pelosi may have broken a federal law with her little stunt.
Pelosi goes on the defensive
During her weekly presser, Pelosi addressed the spectacle, stating, “I extended a hand of friendship to him to welcome him as the President of the United States to the People’s House,” adding that “It was also an act of kindness because he looked to me like he was a little sedated.”
“He looked that way last year too,” she said. Watch:
Everyone understands this is a relationship that is not likely to be repaired until one of them is removed from their current position, one way or another.
Even so, accusing a president of being on drugs while addressing the nation, well, we can only imagine the outrage that would have ensued if such an accusation was levied against Democrat favorite Barack Obama.
It now looks as though Trump has truly broken Pelosi, who is generally regarded as a master tactician by political analysts, although the American people may not agree with that assessment.
Pelosi may not have only gotten egg on her face with this exchange and her ensuing comments, but she also probably cost her party the White House, any chance of winning the Senate, and the majority in the House come November.
