It’s not easy being the leader of the Democrats. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was most recently criticized for failing to take a strong stand when it came to dealing with anti-Semitism within the House, leading many to wonder whether she was losing control of the party altogether.
But despite all the chaos and the doubt, Pelosi is still the Democrats’ “undisputed leader,” according to political analyst Stuart Rothenburg.
Post-election, Pelosi “continues to be the glue that holds the Democratic Party together, proving again and again that those of us who believed last summer that her party would be better off with new leadership were completely wrong,” he opined, citing her standoff with President Donald Trump over the government shutdown.
During the 2016 election cycle, we started to hear calls for change at the top of the Democrat party. After Hillary Clinton lost, it became clear the party needed a new image.
Instead, the party stuck by its old warhorses in Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
When the Democrats gained the House in 2018, there were more than few that thought the party might go in a different direction. However, that never happened, and Pelosi, despite some party resistance, was named House Speaker.
The Real Story
Still, the new freshman class in the House is presenting Pelosi with plenty of challenges.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) released her “Green New Deal” with no realistic way to pay for it. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) criticized Obama and made anti-Semitic remarks that have created even more turmoil within the party.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) insists on moving forward with impeachment papers even though party leadership, meaning Pelosi, has already said impeachment is not in the best interests of the party.
Another problem Pelosi faces right now is Donald Trump. For two years, her Democrat party has been preaching collusion, only to have that house of cards collapse on Friday.
Trump has proven he is willing to get in the mud to defend himself. To that point, Pelosi often finds herself the subject of his wrath with no real defense.
Democrats can say they’re unified as much as they want, but we can clearly see Pelosi is nothing more than a captain of a rudderless ship.
