Pelosi suggests passing HR 1 would put Democrats in a ‘better’ position going into midterms

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) just admitted the truth about Democrats’ massive election overhaul package, H.R. 1.

Breitbart reports that Pelosi recently let it slip that Dems have a better chance of winning future federal elections if the bill, dubbed the “For the People Act,” were to become law.

Pelosi admits it

Pelosi’s admission came during an interview Wednesday with PBS NewsHour. There, the speaker was asked about the difficulties that House Democrats face in holding their majority in the lower chamber following the 2022 midterms.

The feat just got even harder with the release of the results of the 2020 Census, which are poised to allow Republicans to redraw congressional district maps to their favor across the country.

With Republicans headed toward a boon in the November 2022 match-ups, PBS host Judy Woodruff wanted to know how Pelosi would tee up to fight back. And the speaker didn’t hold back in her response.

“Well, the elections are about campaigns, and we are ready,” Pelosi said, according to Breitbart. “We are ready with our Ms: mobilization to own the ground to get out the vote with our message of unity for the people — again, so proud of what the Biden-Harris administration is putting forth — and then, of course, with the resources, the money that is needed to do this.”

She went on: “But we would be better if we can [pass] H.R. and S. 1 in order to remove obstacles to participation for people to vote.”

GOP cries foul

Like its companion in the Senate, H.R. 1 imposes a number of changes on America’s elections systems that critics say amount to a federal government takeover of what has long been regarded as a state matter. Among the provisions are ones that would make permanent — and widespread — the many changes made to election procedures ahead of the 2020 race, when the coronavirus was still raging across the U.S.

It’s provisions like these that have Republicans including Sen. Ted Cruz (TX) crying foul. “It is a radical bill,” the Texas lawmaker said in March, according to Breitbart. “What does it do? It federalizes all elections. It strikes down every election reform protection at the state level,” he added, pointing specifically to voter ID laws.

Cruz went on to lament that H.R. 1 “sets up automatic voter registration, which would result in millions of illegal immigrants, and criminals, and felons being able to vote.”

“The Democrats believe if illegal immigrants and felons are voting, that benefits the Democrats and keeps them in power. Not only that, it mandates universal mail-in balloting, it mandates ballot harvesting. This is all designed to facilitate fraud,” the senator said of the bill, according to Breitbart.

With her latest interview, it seems Pelosi has admitted that Cruz and others in the GOP are right on the money in their assessments. Surprisingly, it may actually be a Democrat — West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin — who keeps the proposal from ever becoming reality.
