Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced Sunday that the House would hold a vote the following day on a measure urging Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment in an effort to remove President Donald Trump, the Washington Examiner reported.
Despite only days left until Trump leaves the White House and President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, Democrats still want Pence to remove Trump.
To many Americans, the effort to impeach or remove Trump via the 25th Amendment is a continuation of the insane hyper-partisan politics that Biden promised to do away with.
The resolution that Democrats wanted to pass Monday called on Pence to hold Trump “incapable of executing the duties of his office and to immediately exercise powers as acting President.”
Pelosi said in a statement on the measure:
In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency, because this President represents an imminent threat to both. As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action.
On Monday, House Republicans blocked unanimous consent of the resolution, meaning another vote in the lower chamber will likely be held later this week.
In the meantime, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) already seems to have sealed the fate of impeachment, as the Senate won’t consider it until Jan. 19 at the earliest, meaning the process wouldn’t begin in the Senate until the day before Biden is sworn in as president.
Bigger objectives for Biden
Beyond Jan. 20, there is a debate if Congress can impeach an ex-president and there seems to be no solid conclusion.
Impeaching Trump after he leaves office would no doubt take months of valuable time.
Wasting Congress’s time on a questionable legal battle about impeaching an ex-president certainly won’t be something that Biden is interested in.
The rational decision for Democrats would be to prepare for Biden taking over the White House and engaging in Biden’s desired legislative agenda, but instead, Democrats seem to still be obsessed with Trump.
For Americans who voted for a return to normalcy under Biden, this decision by the Democratic Party is likely an unwelcome one.
