U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has long been preoccupied with removing President Donald Trump from office through any means possible.
After launching an impeachment trial that fizzled out before it even reached the GOP-led Senate, she is now pushing a new bill that would allow a commission to evaluate the commander in chief’s ability to carry out the duties of the office, as reported by Fox News.
“This is not about President Trump”
Pelosi hinted at the development in a statement to reporters on Thursday, according to The Hill.
“Tomorrow, by the way, tomorrow, come here tomorrow,” she said in reference to the president’s recent rhetoric regarding a stalled coronavirus stimulus bill. “We’re going to be talking about the 25th Amendment.”
As promised, she announced her proposed legislation on Friday.
“This is not about President Trump,” Pelosi claimed. “He will face the judgment of the voters. But he shows the need for us to create a process for future presidents.”
“An altered state”
The House speaker had earlier fueled speculation that Trump’s coronavirus infection or related treatments might have clouded his judgment and rendered him unable to perform his duties.
“The president is, shall we say, in an altered state right now,” Pelosi said during an interview earlier in the week, suggesting that his “disassociation from reality would be funny if it weren’t so deadly.”
Trump reacted in a tweet asserting that Pelosi is considering the move “in order to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris,” which he opined would benefit the Democrats “because Sleepy Joe is out of it!!!”
For her part, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted that the “only one who needs the 25th Amendment is Nancy Pelosi herself.”
She’ll “stop at nothing”
Needless to say, other Republicans were similarly outraged over Pelosi’s proclamation, including U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), who tweeted that “Congressional Democrats have not stopped their quest to remove President [Trump] from office since he was sworn into office, working night and day to overturn the will of Americans.”
Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) spoke for countless Pelosi critics by declaring that she “will stop at NOTHING to take down” the president.
