McCarthy says House Dems’ election reform bill is a way for ‘Pelosi to hold on to her power’

Last week, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) warned Americans that the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that Democrats are currently looking to pass would be better named “The Pelosi Payoff.”

This week, McCarthy has a new warning for Americans. According to Fox News, the California Republican said Sunday that the election reform bill Democrats are looking to push through Congress is nothing more than a Pelosi power-grab

“The most to lose”

McCarthy made the remarks during an appearance on Fox’s Sunday Morning Futures.

“No, I don’t have the most to lose: The American public have the most to lose because we would lose our freedom,” McCarthy said of the bill, according to Fox.

The measure is actually known as the “For the People Act,” or H.R. 1 — which, according to McCarthy, shows that the bill is a top priority for Pelosi and her caucus.

“When you put a bill into Congress, the majority party reserves the first numbers,” the congressman explained, according to Fox. “This is H.R. 1, so this is most important for Nancy Pelosi to hold on to her power.”

The measure is a sweeping election reform package that makes permanent many of the changes to voting that were made ahead of the 2020 election. Democrats argue that such a bill is needed to expand and protect the voting rights of Americans, but Republicans argue that the real purpose of the bill is to tip the election rules in Dems’ favor.

What America really needs

Last week, every Democrat in the House signed on to H.R. 1, and it’s expected to come up for a final vote in the coming week, Fox reports.

But as McCarthy correctly pointed out on Sunday, when the American people “lose their confidence in elections, you’ll break society down and we will lose America as we know it.”

Accordingly, McCarthy argued that Democrats should be focused on restoring that confidence — which is certainly not what H.R. 1 will do. “You have to clean up the rolls,” McCarthy said, according to Fox.

“We need to have integrity and accountability and elections that people will trust at the end of the day,” McCarthy told Sunday Morning Futures. “And, that’s why we have to have reforms and that’s why H.R. 1 should be voted down.”

McCarthy hit the nail on the head here. America simply can’t afford another election as chaotic as last November’s.
