President Joe Biden has frequently been referred to by supporters and opponents alike as a de facto third term for the Obama administration, during which he served as vice president.
In a recent gaffe, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) might have inadvertently added fuel to that fire.
“Keep government open”
According to the Washington Examiner, the House speaker urged her colleagues on Capitol Hill to continue working toward advancing the “full Obama agenda.”
During a press conference on Tuesday, Pelosi referenced the looming possibility of a government shutdown, imploring fellow lawmakers to pass a short-term funding bill and raise the debt ceiling.
These actions were needed “imminently,” she claimed, to “address the full Obama agenda of building back better.”

Of course, the blunder was widely shared and ridiculed on social media, though it was clear she had been referencing Biden’s so-called “Build Back Better” agenda, which entails a $3.5 trillion spending package and has caused a rift between moderates and progressives in the Democratic Party.
Democratic Party infighting
While those on the left demand that the massive bill is passed prior to a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure proposal, moderates want to vote on the smaller bill first.
Notably, the current impasse within Pelosi’s party is largely her creation. She moved earlier this year to link the two pieces of legislation in order to gain leverage over members of her caucus who had not yet fallen in line behind her.
Now she is prepared to sever that link ahead of the rapidly approaching deadline by which to pass the infrastructure bill to avoid a lapse in funding for highways and transportation.
At the same time, she is trying to build and maintain a united front to pass both bills with only the narrowest of majorities on Capitol Hill.
When it comes to her slip-up about the “full Obama agenda,” it will be up to the American people to determine whether it was more likely a mistake by an elderly politician who has been in D.C. for too long or an accidental revelation regarding who is actually calling the shots behind the scenes.
