For all her caution and misgivings about impeachment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) seems to be fixated on the issue lately.
In a strange comment, Pelosi claimed that President Donald Trump is upset because House Democrats are not yet pursuing impeachment.
Trump wants to be impeached?!
Pelosi’s remarks came during a news conference on Thursday, after reports had already been circulated about Pelosi telling Democrat leaders that Trump “wants to be impeached so he can be exonerated by the Senate.”
“There is no question,” she said, continuing the idea. “The White House is just crying out for impeachment. That’s why he flipped yesterday.”
“I think what really got to him was these court cases,” she continued, “and the fact the House Democratic Caucus is not on a path to impeachment, and that’s where he wants us to be.”
Pelosi claims “cover-up”
By “flipped yesterday” the speaker was referring to a White House meeting scheduled with herself, Trump, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Wednesday, which the president called off after he learned of reports that Pelosi said he was “engaged in a cover-up.”
“We believe no one is above the law, including the president of the United States and we believe the president of the United States is engaged in a cover-up,” Pelosi is quoted as saying.
Trump hits back
Trump responded to Pelosi’s accusations in a big way. “I’m the most transparent president, probably, in the history of this country,” he said
“Things are going well, and I said let’s have the meeting on infrastructure, we’ll get that done easily, that’s one of the easy ones. But instead of walking in happily into a meeting, I walk in to look at people that had just said I was doing a cover-up,” Trump said on Wednesday.
“I don’t do cover-ups,” he added.
After defending himself, Trump went on the offensive, pointing out that Democrats continue to obsess over an issue that has already been resolved, instead of addressing real issues, like the infrastructure bill. He got his message across in a pair of tweets, hitting the nail on the head:
Will Pelosi and her Democrat colleagues ever move on?
