While Democratic Party leaders insist that science dictates their decisions, recent remarks from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) suggest it only matters when it supports the party’s progressive stance.
Pelosi attracted criticism for attacking the credibility of scientists and officials within the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) after both agencies revised their coronavirus guidelines, as reported by Breitbart.
The House speaker made her remarks on the topic during an appearance on Monday’s installment of All In on MSNBC.
According to Pelosi’s logic, the government agencies’ findings cannot be trusted because they have been taken over by the Trump administration.
“The president wants politics to determine how we approach the virus, not science,” she claimed, according to Breitbart. “I think the CDC has been totally discredited.”
Pelosi went on to “thank” Trump for “discrediting the Center[s] for Disease Control, which is the prevention agency to stop the spread,” by taking what she perceived to be an insufficiently serious tone on the pandemic in its early stages.
“And HHS is completely a joke,” she added, as Breitbart reported. “Because that has been taken over politically by the administration.”
“Currently updating its recommendations”
Attacks on the CDC by Pelosi and others in her party stem from a recent change in guidance related to how the coronavirus spreads through the air.
After a proposed change was prematurely posted to the agency’s website, it was taken down and replaced with a statement explaining the error.
“A draft version of proposed changes to these recommendations was posted in error to the agency’s official website,” the statement read. “CDC is currently updating its recommendations regarding airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Once this process has been completed, the update[d] language will be posted.”
Even as Pelosi attempts to denounce Trump and the GOP for politicizing COVID-19, members of her party are actively campaigning off of the pandemic virus.
With Pelosi now openly questioning the legitimacy of integral government agencies, it seems likely that the rest of this election season will be a race to the bottom for too many Democratic candidates.
