Pelosi calls McCarthy a ‘moron’ for criticizing mask mandate despite flouting her own rule

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) abruptly reversed course from just two months ago by announcing this week that even fully vaccinated Americans should go back to wearing masks amid rising cases of COVID-19. The development prompted Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to reimpose a strict mask mandate on House members and staffers — a move that earned the speaker swift criticism from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarty (R-CA).

Now, Pelosi has responded by calling McCarty a “moron” and championing the science, even as she failed to don her own mask at a recent event, as BizPacReview reported.

“Such a moron”

Immediately after the CDC’s Tuesday about-face on masking, Capitol Attending Physician Brian Monahan followed suit with a memo of his own calling for the House to pick back up its own mask mandate.

Pelosi quickly relented, reimposing her prior order on all House members and staffers, regardless of vaccination status. McCarthy wasn’t amused.

In a tweet on the move, the minority leader said: “The threat of bringing masks back is not a decision based on science, but a decision conjured up by liberal government officials who want to continue to live in a perpetual pandemic state.”

Wednesday morning, a maskless Pelosi — surrounded by maskless aides, security, and reporters — was asked to respond to McCarthy’s critique. She was curt: “He’s such a moron.”

Pelosi triples down

Incredibly, Pelosi’s top aide, Drew Hammill, appeared to double down on the insult in a tweet of his own, writing: “Unfortunately, we can’t verify this audio because of poor quality, but I can confirm that the Speaker believes that saying a mask requirement is ‘not a decision based on science’ is moronic.”

The speaker also didn’t back down from their insult when asked about it at her weekly press conference Thursday — where she was, again, not wearing a mask, despite being on property covered by her own mandate.

Asked to clarify why McCarthy is a moron, Pelosi remarked: “I said earlier in my comments: science, science, science, and science. On almost every subject that you can name, science is the answer. Whether it’s the climate crisis, whether it’s a health crisis, what — whether it’s our preeminence in the world, in technology: science, science, science, science.”

She added: “To say that wearing a mask is not based on science, I think, is not wise, and that was my comment. And that’s all I’m going say about that.”

It’s clear bipartisanship is really on Pelosi’s priority list. (Not.)
