Attorney General Bill Barr appeared before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday for a hearing in which he was treated with unvarnished contempt and a shocking degree of disrespect by many of the Democratic members of the panel.
The venom directed at Barr apparently comes straight from the top of the opposition party, a fact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made evident when she repeatedly insulted the attorney general during a post-hearing interview on MSNBC, the Washington Examiner reported.
The attacks on Barr included the House Speaker referring to him as a “blob,” undignified, “despicable,” and nothing more than a “henchman” for President Donald Trump.
Speaker Pelosi also doubled down on and defended her characterization of federal law enforcement officers protecting federal property is Portland, Oregon as something akin to “stormtroopers,” a comparison to the brutal paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party.
Asked to respond to Barr’s testimony, Pelosi said the American people hadn’t learned anything — though Democrats rarely allowed him to even respond to their questions — and suggested that Barr had nothing but “contempt” for American democracy, Breitbart reported.
She also criticized the “inconsistencies” in Barr’s response to different protests around the country, conveniently overlooking the disparate nature of those events and the fact that many demonstrations, especially those that remain nonviolent, do not warrant a federal response.
Pelosi also seemingly insinuated that Barr and President Trump would refuse to leave if voted out of office in November — which Barr, of course, never implied — and said of him, “I just thought he was despicable and so beneath the dignity of an attorney general.”
Barr a “henchman” for Trump
MSNBC host Ari Melber played a clip of Barr addressing Pelosi’s “stormtroopers” comment denigrating federal law enforcement in which he suggested that such remarks could possibly lead to increased violence against the police and said such words were “irresponsible” coming from a party leader.
“I never heard him say anything about Rudy Giuliani when he said they were like stormtroopers when they went into [former Trump attorney] Michael Cohen, was it his home, or one of his other henchmen said that the law enforcement were like the Gestapo when they went into one of the other of the president’s henchmen’s place,” Pelosi shot back, according to the Examiner. “I said they acted like stormtroopers, and they did. And my colleagues have said that as well,” she said, adding:
Peaceful protest is who we are and what we do. And do some other people come along and try to disrupt? Yes. But you don’t send in people acting like stormtroopers into the scene and evoking even more unease and unrest. He should be answering for what he did at Lafayette Square, a disgrace. So this — it’s really — he was like a blob. He was like just a henchman for the president of the United States instead of the attorney general of the United States of America.
If you want to know why so many on the left are so openly hostile and full of hatred for President Trump and those who work for him, look no further than the head of the party.
Speaker Pelosi, for better or worse, sets the tenor and tone of everything the Democrats do.
So much for any pretense of bipartisanship or respect for traditions of decorum.
