The mainstream media and Dr. Anthony Fauci have been hailing the state of New York for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, even though the mortality rate in the Empire State has been considerably higher than in many other parts of the country.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), however, has heard enough. According to Breitbart, he suggested Wednesday that Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) deserves to be impeached for his mismanagement of the crisis, particularly with regard to the nursing home policy that led to thousands of potentially preventable deaths.
Despite the fawning coverage Cuomo has received throughout the pandemic, the governor’s track record in terms of managing this admittedly unprecedented public health crisis is in fact quite checkered.
At the height of the surge of COVID-19 cases in New York, Cuomo demanded federal help to establish a series of field hospitals to ease the anticipated burden on the city’s medical facilities.
Several satellite treatment sites were indeed erected — at a massive taxpayer expense — though only a small fraction of the newly-available beds were ever used for patient care before eventually being dismantled.
In the early days of the coronavirus panic, Cuomo sounded the alarm about an impending shortage of life-saving ventilators, prompting the federal government to snap into action to demand that large manufacturers shift production in order to build them.
New York eventually found itself with a sizable stockpile of excess machines that the governor ordered the National Guard to remove and reallocate to other parts of the country, as Fox News reported, compounding the extreme waste of resources in which Cuomo’s continued miscalculations resulted.
Perhaps most controversial — and most offensive to Sen. Paul — was Cuomo’s March policy that required nursing home facilities within the state to accept patients who had already tested positive for COVID-19, even if they were still symptomatic, a policy that remained in place until May, as Fox News separately reported, and which has been blamed for an outsized number of coronavirus fatalities.
Paul: Impeachment in order
While Dr. Fauci and the media are bending over backward to congratulate Cuomo on a job well done, Sen. Paul is dropping a truth bomb for all to hear. “I see a mountain of people who died, particularly, in the nursing homes,” he said, according to Breitbart.
The senator added: “ I think Gov. Cuomo should be impeached for what he did, for the disastrous decision he made to send patients with coronavirus back to nursing homes, and virtually half his people who died were in the nursing homes, same with New Jersey.”
The real shame here is that mainstream journalists will almost certainly continue ignoring the facts of what happened in New York, or somehow find a way to shift blame onto President Donald Trump.
The bottom line is that it was not Trump who failed New York, it was the state’s Democratic leadership, but that’s not a conclusion the media is ever likely to reach.
