Celebrity marriages often don’t last… unless you are Dolly Parton. The country music superstar revealed the secrets of her long-lasting marriage to Carl Thomas Dean in an exclusive interview with People magazine.
“I always joke and laugh when people ask me what’s the key to my long marriage and lasting love,” Parton told People. “I always say ‘Stay gone!’ and there’s a lot of truth to that. I travel a lot, but we really enjoy each other when we’re together and the little things we do.”
The couple, who met when Parton was just 18, will soon be celebrating their 53rd anniversary, all but unheard of in this day and age.
When Dolly Parton burst onto the scene, her record label wanted her to appear to be single and available to sell more records.
Parton obliged, deciding to elope with her fiancé rather than having a high-profile wedding.
Throughout Dolly’s long and successful career, you barely heard a word about her husband, which was just fine with him.
The problem with many entertainment marriages is the spouses are often competing for attention.
In a marriage such as this, where one person is not in the public eye, the intrusion eventually seems to drive a wedge between the couple.
For Dean, that was never a problem because he prefers to stay out of the spotlight.
Instead, he looks forward to simple, low-key dates with his wife. “When I met my husband, he wanted to take me out to dinner. He pulled up to the drive-in window and got our food at McDonald’s,” said Parton. “We know a few little places we can go without being bothered. He only likes to go places where he can be comfortable!”
Even so, Dolly always felt the one thing that was missing was her dream wedding the label made her forego.
Correcting the Past
Dolly being Dolly, she was eventually going to get what she wanted.
In this case, for their 50th anniversary, Dolly and Carl Thomas Dean had the dream wedding she always wanted.
Dolly stated, “It’s been a good 50 years and I don’t know how many more year’s we’ll have left.”
When asked about the secret of such a long-lasting and successful marriage, Dolly replied simply, “Stay gone!”
Dolly has always been away from home a lot for her career, and her husband does not mind.
Rather than get frustrated by her schedule, they couple chooses to enjoy the quiet moments at home when they are actually together.
In addition to their McDonald’s date nights, the couple often spend a weekend out traveling in their RV or go on a picnic.
Basically, Dolly says, when you are with that person, be with them completely and enjoy every second of that time, because you just don’t know how many more years you have left with them.
