Overwhelming majority of Americans do not want Biden to seek reelection

Americans are ready to move on from President Joe Biden.

According to a new poll, seven out of every 10 Americans do not want Biden to seek reelection in 2024.

The poll comes from Harvard CAPS-Harris. It was taken just before the Fourth of July Weekend, on June 28 and 29. A total of 1,308 registered voters participated.

The numbers

One of the questions that the pollster asked participants was whether they would like to see Biden run for reelection in 2024. The answer was an overwhelming “no.”

The Hill reports:

A Harvard CAPS–Harris Poll survey shared exclusively with The Hill found that 71 percent of respondents polled do not think Biden should run for a second term, compared to 29 percent who say he should run.

The pollster also asked participants why they felt the way they do about Biden seeking reelection.

The Hill reports:

Among the contingent of respondents who believe the president should not run, 45 percent said Biden should not make another bid because he is a bad president, while about one-third of respondents said he is too old and about one-quarter said because it is time for a change.

It’s a pretty convincing result

In recent weeks, there has been much talk about Biden in the context of 2024. This talk was galvanized by a New York Times article that quoted “many Democratic lawmakers and party officials” as arguing that Biden, for various reasons, ought not to pursue reelection in 2024.

“Many Democratic lawmakers and party officials are venting their frustrations with President Biden’s struggle to advance the bulk of his agenda, doubting his ability to rescue the party from a predicted midterm trouncing, and increasingly viewing him as an anchor that should be cut loose in 2024,” the article reads.

The White House responded to the report largely by dismissing it. The White House also insisted that Biden will run again in 2024.

What does the Harvard CAPS-Harris poll mean for Biden’s 2024 chances? Here’s Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS–Harris Poll survey:

President Biden may want to run again but the voters say ‘no’ to the idea of a second term, panning the job he is doing as president. Only 30 percent of Democrats would even vote for him in a Democratic presidential primary.

It would appear to be in the Democrats’ interest to start looking for a new candidate.
