House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is back on her soapbox.
According to the Daily Caller, the longtime California Democrat confirmed that she supports a nationwide mask mandate in an interview with ABC on Sunday, announcing that such an order is “long overdue.”
Long overdue, or government overreach?
President Donald Trump and fellow Republicans have been hesitant to even bring up the idea of requiring Americans to wear face masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic. According to The New York Times, the disease has infected some 2.5 million in the U.S. alone and killed at least 125,000.
But while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said that mask-wearing should be a common practice, many in the GOP feel a strict requirement would constitute government overreach.
They want to leave it up to the states. Pelosi, however, sees it differently.
While appearing on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, the House speaker was asked if a nationwide mandate should be put in place. “Oh, it’s definitely long overdue for that,” she said, according to the Daily Caller.
“And my understanding is that the Centers for Disease Control has recommended the use of masks but not required it because they don’t want [to] offend the president,” she added before taking another shot at Trump. “The president should be an example. You know, real men wear masks.
“Be an example to the country and wear the mask,” Pelosi said, according to the Daily Caller. “It’s not about protecting yourself, it’s about protecting others and their families.”
The great mask debate
Just how effective masks are at stopping or slowing down the spread of the coronavirus has been widely debated as the disease makes its way across the country.
That debate was exacerbated by the insistence of Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top official on Trump’s coronavirus task force, that Americans did not need to wear masks and that they would have little impact — a stance he has since changed.
The biggest problem with Pelosi’s statement, however, is not her defense of face masks or even her insults against Trump. Rather, the House speaker had the audacity to suggest that the CDC is holding back on guidelines to keep Americans healthy because they’re afraid Trump would be offended.
Of course, her interviewer let that claim go unchallenged. When will she be held accountable?
