Omar confident Pelosi will ‘take decisive action’ against Boebert ‘next week’

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has faced significant criticism over derogatory remarks she made about fellow Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).

According to Omar, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has signaled that she will strip Boebert of her committee assignments.

“I see fret all over his face”

The dispute stems from a leaked video that revealed Boebert disparaging Omar at a political event in Colorado.

Among other things, the Republican lawmaker referenced a supposed encounter she had with Omar at the Capitol.

She told supporters that they were in an elevator when a Capitol police officer began running in their direction.

“I see fret all over his face, and he’s reaching, and the door’s shutting, like I can’t open it, like what’s happening,” Boebert said. “I look to my left, and there she is. Ilhan Omar. And I said, ‘Well, she doesn’t have a backpack, we should be fine.”

She reportedly reached out to Omar by phone and claimed the Minnesota Democrat demanded a public apology. The conversation is said to have ended when Omar hung up on her. Boebert did go on to apologize to the “Muslim community,” but not Omar specifically.

“Send a clear and decisive message”

During a recent CNN interview, Omar argued that Democrats in the chamber should use their majority status to punish Boebert.

“We should punish and sanction Boebert by stripping her of her committees, by rebuking her language,” Omar said. “By doing everything that we can to send a clear and decisive message to the American public that if the Republicans are not going to be adults and condemn this, that we are going to do that.”

When asked whether Pelosi gave her any indication that she might hold a vote to implement such penalties, Omar said: “I’ve had a conversation with the speaker and I’m very confident that she will take decisive action next week.”

With a razor-thin majority in the House and all indicators pointing toward a GOP-controlled chamber after next year’s midterm elections, this might be little more than a partisan attempt by Democrats to use their remaining power against political opponents.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Pelosi actually follows through on any promises she might have made to Omar.
