Reps. Ilhan Omar, Liz Cheney resume fiery Twitter feud

A Twitter fight broke out between two of the best-known female members of the House of Representatives over the weekend, and given their history of sharp exchanges, the latest bout should come as no surprise.

Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Liz Cheney (R-WY) once again traded social media blows until the fighter in the red corner landed a knockout blow that appears to have left her opponent seeing stars.

Round 1

Things got underway Thursday night with Omar going on the offensive, attacking Cheney for saying that the investigation into Russian election interference conducted by House Democrats helped Russian President Vladimir Putin by undermining “our democracy.”

“Liz Cheney is accusing a committee investigating Russian election interference of … helping Vladimir Putin,” tweeted Omar. “This is an impressive lie even for the Cheney family.”

Besides being the third leading Republican in the House, Liz Cheney is the daughter of Dick Cheney, former President George W. Bush’s number two. With that political pedigree, she certainly knew what to do next.

Knockout blow

Cheney responded to Omar’s attack with a haymaker, hitting her where it hurts.

“No surprise @IlhanMN, an anti-Semitic Socialist who slanders US troops and carries water for Hamas and Maduro, doesn’t recognize the truth when she hears it,” she tweeted.

All in one go, Cheney managed to capture all of Omar’s weaknesses: her chronic anti-Semitism, suggesting that Jewish-American politicians have a dual loyalty to American and Israel; her anti-Americanism, claiming that America, rather than the socialist regime, is at fault for the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela; and her ties to CAIR, a Hamas-linked terrorist group, at whose fundraising rallies Omar has spoken.

Omar has yet to respond.

Frequent sparring partners

Earlier in the week, Cheney went after Omar for a tweet in which she wrote, “How many more protesters must be shot, rockets must be fired, and little kids must be killed until the endless cycle of violence ends?” The status quo of occupation and humanitarian crisis in Gaza is unsustainable. Only real justice can bring about security and lasting peace.”

Cheney responded: “1. Hamas controls Gaza. 2. Hamas is firing rockets at civilians in Israel. 3. @IlhanMN is defending Hamas. Real question is how many times will @IlhanMN rush to the defense of terrorists?”

Another key question is how many more Twitter battles is Omar going to have to lose in embarrassing fashion before she realizes that perhaps she isn’t quite cut out for them?
