Up until now, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) had not joined in support of fellow progressive Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-MI) impeachment effort against President Donald Trump.
But after the release of the Mueller report on Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez quit holding out, and announced via Twitter that she would be signing Tlaib’s impeachment resolution.
Tlaib made impeachment central to her congressional campaign message in 2018. Her recent efforts to gain support for impeaching Trump have been supported by the Democrat reaction to the Mueller report.
While Nancy Pelosi has continued to try to rein in the movement, Tlaib is now starting to win support from Democrat presidential candidates, most notably Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA).
Do They Have a Case?
In today’s political world, impeachment is something that comes up for just about every president.
There are usually one or two fringe politicians who try to grab their 15 minutes of fame by generating interest in impeaching the sitting president.
AOC, however, appears to think this is more than just a headline grab by Tlaib.
Ocasio-Cortez stated, “Mueller’s report is clear in pointing to Congress’ responsibility in investigating obstruction of justice by the President.
“It is our job as outlined in Article 1, Sec 2, Clause 5 of the Constitution.”
That clause specifies that the “sole power of impeachment” lies with the House of Representatives, but it does not state they can abuse this power or go on a wild goose chase to pursue it.
Had Mueller’s report found evidence of collusion or conspiracy by the Trump campaign with Russia, conservatives would have been at the front of the line to demand Trump’s impeachment. But it didn’t.
Trump was exonerated by Mueller and it is high time the Democrats in office stopped wasting our time and money by continuing to pursue this.
